LOS ANGELES — Christmastime comedy “Family Switch” brings a new twist to an old premise.
In the Netflix film, every member of the Walker family wakes up to find themselves in each other's bodies – including the baby and their dog.
Jennifer Garner and Ed Helms star as the parents, who try but fail to understand their kids (played by Emma Myers and Brady Noon.) After trying to force a happy Christmas photo, the family swaps bodies during a cosmic event and run-in with a mysterious woman (played by acting legend Rita Moreno.)
Entertainment reporter Kim Holcomb talked to Garner, Helms, Myers and Noon about making the holiday movie.
HOLCOMB: "In defense of the Walkers, if Rita Moreno told me to do something, even if it made me switch bodies, I would do it. Pretty amazing doing those scenes with her?”
GARNER: “Pretty amazing doing those scenes. My character was a little grumpy with her, and I kept apologizing, and she's like, 'You know I know we're in a scene, right?' (laughter)"
HOLCOMB: "If you actually switched bodies in real life, what would you celebrate about being the other person?"
HELMS: "My extraordinary volleyball skills that I would inherit if I became Brady."
NOON: "I think I would just be playing the banjo all day. Ed can rip on the banjo."
GARNER: "I really would want to be in Emma's body. I would go outside and do an aerial."
HOLCOMB: "I loved the music in this movie, a lot of it took me back. And I have to tell you, ‘Bust a Move’ is my karaoke song. What is your karaoke song, if you have one?”
GARNER: “’Just Call Me Angel in the Morning,’ or ‘You're So Vain.’”
MYERS: “’I Want It That Way.’”
HOLCOMB: "The characters in this film feel very unseen or unappreciated at times. What do you do on a regular basis that you feel like you do not get enough credit for?"
HELMS: "I'm a courteous driver. I let people in, I typically don't run yellow lights. I'm a courteous driver and I don't think I get enough credit for that."
HOLCOMB: "The courtesy wave is my litmus test. You either give a courtesy wave, or you're just a horrible human being.”
HELMS: “Right. Yes, sometimes if I don't get the courtesy wave, I'm going to give you a tap. (laughter)"
HOLCOMB: "I would love for you guys to tell me if I go too far or not far enough with my family's holiday memories. Christmas music in the car starting in late October?"
GARNER AND MYERS: "Too far - too far."
HELMS: "That's a little early.”
NOON: “I think once Thanksgiving hits, I think that's when it’s okay.”
HELMS: “Because before, in early November, you're kind of stepping on Thanksgiving, That's time for Thanksgiving carols."
HOLCOMB: "Everyone has to wear either reindeer antlers or a Santa hat while we're opening presents.”
HELMS: “Not far enough, you've got to go full fleece footie jammies…”
NOON: “And a beard."
HOLCOMB: "Last one: Christmas in July."
MYERS: "I do that sometimes with my family, too.”
GARNER: “Explain it to me."
MYERS: "We do handmade stuff, everybody has to handmake something for somebody else and then we all swap it.”
GARNER: “Okay, all right, I'm going to try that this next year, I'll let you know."
“Family Switch” is rated PG and begins streaming on Netflix November 30.
